A formerly rundown 1950’s bowling alley in Red Deer, Alberta has come a long way since the two story structure echoed with the sounds of rolling balls and falling pins. The building underwent a complete restoration with LEED® Certification as the goal, this spiked the interest for a vegetated roof. Today the Berry Architecture Office Building is home to two firms, Berry Architecture + Associates and Downey Roth Hrywkiw Fidek LLP. This building is the first privately owned building to receive LEED Gold Certification in the city of Red Deer, where energy and water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, modern comfort and functionality are key elements.
“The building’s crowning glory is the green roof which features a stream, native plantings, vegetable gardens, and bird, butterfly and bee habitats”, as stated by Berry Architecture + Associates. SOPREMA®’s SOPRANATURE® vegetated system was chosen for this project attaining LEED Gold certification. This project was awarded Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Annual Green Roof & Wall Design Awards of Excellence from North America for the Extensive Industrial/Commercial category in September 2015.
